- Stress is caused by unrealistic and very high expectations. Here are some tips to boost self-confidence in students.
- It is exam time and all the students are stressed as they cannot eat well and do not get proper sleep.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid.” – Albert Einstein.
Stress is caused by unrealistic and very high expectations. Now let’s change WHY into our questions instead of saying why does this happen to me? Why is life so unfair?
How about we ask the question differently like– What is the solution to the problem. What do I need to do to overcome exam stress?
Here are some tips by Mayank Dhawan, Former Assistant Professor, University of Delhi and Founder of Proscience:
1. Choose the right container:
The first solution is choosing the right container. Are we following the herd? Do we have faith and courage to follow our passion, are we in charge, or is someone else driving our bus? Now life is a paradox. Stress is caused when we try to control our life and its outcome.
And also lack of control is one of the biggest causes of stress. So, Let’s see what you can control and what you should not. What you can control is your preparation, attitude, time management, priorities, efforts, and expectations.
These are your goals. What you cannot control is your rank, your score, your gold medal, and the admission. These are dreams, not goals. So, focus on your goals and leave the dreams to the universe to fulfill.
2. Focus on building the right skills:
I know you are tensed about your exams as time is ticking, there is no room for failing, the pressure of your past mistakes but remember one piece of paper does not decide your future. Your skills and your knowledge are going to be your key strengths going forward.
Now many times we know for instance that English is our weak point or we need to practise math every day and I know how many resolutions you have made each year to say I am going to improve my communication skills per instance but we feel so stressed and unmotivated that instead we just keep watching one Instagram reel video after another. Another monk believes that everything happens for a reason and we should not regret our past.
In fact, we should use our past as the most powerful teacher, so shake up your excuses, take your progress into your own hand and see the magic build up in your life. Develop a passion for your learning to make you perfect.
3. Expand your container:
It means to count your blessings, write a gratitude diary. Second, remind yourself of how talented and awesome you are and think of all the good things. Three, expand your circle of friends to include inspiring and motivating people who trust you.
Keep some emotional distance from people that make you feel small and sharing with your friends helps you calm down. Four, enlarge your purpose by helping those that are suffering and that way you focus less on your own pain, and Five, enlarge your consciousness, make a spiritual connection to get the strength to be able to deal with the pain.
Now for the bonus tip, focus on one thing at a time. Now, try to control your awareness, focus on the present moment, be mindful and focus on what you can control, and if your awareness goes here or there, stop, take a break, bring your awareness back to the present moment and keep going.
Take at least seven hours of sleep, take vitamin C supplements, try to get about 10 minutes of sunlight every day, do some light exercises, sing in the shower and smile a lot.
